One of the most important parts of our world today is transportation. No matter what you are doing, you’re probably consuming, using, or watching something that has been transported. It’s a pivotal part of the world we live in and something nearly impossible to avoid. One day, Clayton Cleere decided that he wanted to participate directly in this industry. He had gone to a bank and secured a deal where they wanted a $20,000 down payment. Anyone who has ventured into business knows that these seed funds can be a daunting task. It simply wasn’t feasible for him and his family.

He felt discouraged as that meeting came to an end. Like too many potential Native entrepreneurs, he came to a point where he gave up. Looking to other opportunities to provide for his family, he received a call from a former CPCDC client that had started a trucking business via out Commercial Loan Program and was now looking to retire. The owner wanted to sell, Clayton wanted to buy, and the former client encouraged him to reach out to our and see if the services would benefit him. A seed was planted.

Clayton applied for our commercial loan program and was approved through our State Small Business Credit Initiative (SSBCI) Program to purchase the trucks and business, and it took off from there. Clayton learned a lot from his mentor and practice about the trucking industry and the services he could capitalize on. One of the takeaways that he spoke about from the early stages is the challenges of invoicing, paying salaries, fuel, products, and providing a service and potentially waiting for up to a month on payment. Regardless, Clayton overcame this challenge and loves what he does and the customers he serves to this day. Business has in fact been so good that Clayton decided to expand his fleet and returned to CPCDC.

Clayton cites his great experience with the CPCDC the first time to inquiring and applying for a second commercial loan. Clayton credits the convenience, hospitality, and easy-going nature of the CPCDC for retaining his business. He was approved for his second loan and was able to purchase more equipment to continue expanding his services to his clientele.
