Comma Coffee Shop: The Power of a Pause

In Downtown Shawnee, Comma Coffee Shop stands as more than just a coffee shop. The CPN-owned business is a symbol of perseverance, community, and the importance of slowing down. Guided by its meaningful slogan: “Every day needs a comma,” the shop offers a place where people pause, reset, and reconnect in the middle of life’s busy moments.

For the two owning families, Jesse and Callie Ingram accompanied by Rebecca and Johnathan Hilton, the coffee shop began as a vision rooted in passion and purpose. Like many small business owners, they faced the reality that turning a dream into a reality comes with challenges, financial hurdles, uncertainty, and the pressure of building something from the ground up. Starting a business is never easy, and the early stages required persistence, faith, and the willingness to navigate obstacles that often discourage even the most determined entrepreneurs.

One of the most critical steps in her journey was securing the right financial support. The owners chose to take advantage of Citizen Potawatomi Community Development Corporation’s Commercial Loan Program. CPDC provided not only the capital for funding, but for the accessibility and personal connection that contributed to Comma’s success. Unlike alternative financial institutions, CPCDC provided a local presence, people who understood the Shawnee community, and fellow citizens and a support network that are invested in seeing her business succeed. The ease of the process and the ability to work with a team that truly cared made all the difference, according to Rebecca, and helped turn what could have been a major barrier into a steppingstone.

With CPCDC’s wraparound support, the Ingram’s and Hilton’s were able to bring Comma Coffee Shop to life. From the beginning, she envisioned more than a place to grab coffee. She and her fellow owners wanted to create an atmosphere. Today, the shop’s warm, earthy design reflects that vision, offering a welcoming space where customers feel comfortable staying awhile. Whether its students settling in for long study sessions, professionals hosting off-site meetings, or friends catching up over tea and coffee, Comma has become a natural place for the community.

In addition to high-quality coffee, the shop offers a variety of pastries and baked goods, enhancing the overall experience and giving guests another reason to return. It’s this thoughtful attention to both product and environment that has helped the business grow from a new venture into a local favorite.

Like any small business, success didn’t happen overnight. There were long days, uncertain moments, and the constant challenge of building a customer base. Through consistency, dedication to quality, and an orienting clear sense of purpose, Comma steadily gained momentum. Word spread, relationships built, and what started as a dream began to take root in the community.

Today, Comma Coffee Shop is not only thriving, it is a cornerstone of Downtown Shawnee. It represents what’s possible when determination meets a worthy support system. Through the CPCDC Commercial Loan Program, they were able to overcome early barriers and establish a business that contributes to the local economy while enriching the lives of all those who walk through its doors.

More than anything, Comma is a reminder that success is often built one small step at a time and that in the middle of every challenge, every busy day, and every new beginning. Sometimes all you need is a comma.
